Personality:
Ryoji Kaji, more commonly referred to by his surname, spends a lot of time and effort on appearances, so that he can hide any truths about himself. This is a core principle that drives Kaji's actions, both in his professional life, and in his personal relationships. He appears to be very outgoing, flirtatious, and open, often seeming to say whatever is on his mind, or intentionally saying inflammatory things to get reactions out of people. He often tries to be the center of attention in social situations. His constant flirtations with women is an easy way to do this, so long as the other party knows that his intentions are not serious. But carefully paying attention to what he is actually sharing shows that this is mostly an act.

This is not completely an act, in that Kaji does wish for that openness, but he is more likely to share information that regards other people, than anything personal. He speaks very freely about his past with Misato, partly to embarrass her, and remind her of the person that she used to be. But there are never any anecdotes in his old stories that pertain to himself. Even personal information that seems as benign as the fact that he keeps a watermelon patch is never shared willingly with anyone else. He keeps himself hidden in plain sight.

This is partly a defense mechanism, because of his job. Kaji works as a triple-agent for NERV, SEELE, and the Japanese Government. Again, he puts much of his actions out in plain sight for all to see. He is usually incredibly open about the fact that he is going to turn around and tell another of his contacts exactly what he has been told in a meeting. All three sides know perfectly well that Kaji is working for the other two. So long as he doesn't show any preferential treatment, though, and gives all information to all parties, he is allowed to continue trying to maintain this dangerous balance. He is so open about those dealings so that none of the three agencies determine his true purpose, of attempting to find the truth of Second Impact out. The only person who determines this purpose is Gendo Ikari, who allows Kaji to keep looking and keep digging, because he knows the man's search is pointless.

Towards those younger than himself, Kaji can act as a mentor, especially towards Shinji or Asuka. He recognizes the burdens that have been placed on the Eva pilots, and wishes he could help them. For Shinji, his advice mainly takes the form of reminding Shinji that he is still free to choose his path, or that even if he does choose to pilot the Eva, he doesn't have to do it for the reasons that people are telling him to. These pieces of advice hint at Kaji's own dual-nature, where he maintains a loyalty first and foremost to himself, even if others believe his loyalty is for sale.

In personal relationships, Kaji only reveals anything truly personal about himself at his choosing. The facade that he constantly maintains only drops when he wants it to, when he chooses to have a frank conversation with Ristuko or Shinji. The only person to have ever seen through his facade, to see the "real" Kaji, was Misato Katsuragi. When they were dating in college, Misato and Kaji both saw truths in each other that they were not prepared for. Kaji broke off the relationship, he claims because she reminded him of her father. But, in truth, he broke it off, and maintains the careful distance that he does with Misato after their reunion in the show, because she has seen who he truly is. He longs for that re-connection with Misato, but only on his own terms. In that way, when he flirts with Misato, he often accuses her of having feelings for him, insinuates that she cannot control herself around him. He hides behind these sorts of statements to keep from admitting that he actually has feelings for her, as well.

From his canon pull-point, Kaji is beginning to re-discover his feelings for Misato, and realizing that if he can truly find any truth about NERV, the Evas, or Second Impact, then he must choose a side, and upset this delicate balance that he hides behind. If he wants to make any progress on either of these goals, then he has to drop the façade, and show someone what he truly wants. However, he knows that the consequences of this action will get him killed.

Third-Person Sample:
The thing that honestly bothered Kaji the most about this whole situation was how much he didn't want a cigarette.

Wake up in a new world, a place where apparently people have magical powers (but not everyone). Ah, but you do have that extra special ability, and now it's your responsibility to save the world from a poorly-defined threat.

Now, didn't that sound familiar?

Replace magical powers with giant robots, and there you have it. Rei had reacted emotionlessly, rising to her duty because it was what she is. Asuka had reacted out of pride, which would drive her to action, but often that action was impulsive and not the correct choice. And Shinji?

Shinji reacted out of fear, which would either force him to run directly towards or directly away from the danger. It all depended on whether he was more afraid of the Angels or more afraid of his father in that given moment.

Kaji should be completely stressed out, possibly screaming at things, and chain-smoking like there was no tomorrow, but instead, he feels pretty calm about this whole situation. Or maybe he hasn't figured out how to react.

So, if all three of the pilots' reactions are wrong, but people are for some unknown reason depending on Ryoji Kaji, what is a man to do?

Give them a show, a smile, and a joke, flirt with the ladies, and keep his eyes open and his ear to the ground for the truth about what is happening here. The other thing that had linked all of the Evangelion pilots was that none of them had questioned their positions. Why?

Why are we here? Why here specifically? And why is there a threat that we have to fight at all? Those are the truths to look for.

But, first, to find a cigarette. Just on princple.

Re: Museum trip

Ladies! (and gentlemen, I suppose.)
Given that the average one of those little flying fluff-balls knows more about this place than we do, I was planning on hitting up the museums around the center of town. Bit of a boring trip to make by myself, and not usually my pick for a first date, but maybe we can work something out. Just you, me, the quiet halls, and maybe starting to figure out why we were actually brought here, in the first place.

I'll be the good-looking guy waiting in front of that Crystal of Fire we all showed up at.
